Custom 4G LTE MIMO Antenna Development for Automotive Telematics
Custom 4G LTE MIMO Antenna Development for Automotive Telematics
Customer Background
An automotive telematics device manufacturer was developing a new vehicle connectivity terminal that required stable cellular communication in a compact enclosure.
The device needed a 4G LTE MIMO antenna solution to support reliable wireless connectivity while meeting specific requirements for installation space, cable routing, connector compatibility, and vehicle operating conditions.
The customer approached RIDA Antennaer for a customized antenna solution that could be integrated into the device design and adapted for future mass production.

Step 1 - Requirement Analysis
Our engineering team worked with the customer to understand the device architecture and application requirements, including:
-
Supported LTE frequency bands
-
MIMO configuration and antenna placement
-
Available installation space
-
Mounting method and installation location
-
Coaxial cable type and length
-
Connector type, such as SMA or FAKRA
-
Required impedance and VSWR performance
-
Environmental and mechanical requirements
This initial evaluation helped establish the electrical and mechanical requirements before antenna development began.
LTE frequency band configuration
Antenna dimensions and housing design
Coaxial cable length and routing
Connector selection according to the device interface
Antenna placement recommendations for MIMO operation
RF matching optimization
Mechanical integration with the terminal enclosure
The proposed design was reviewed against the customer's available space and installation requirements before prototype production.
Step 3 - Design Review and Sample Preparation
Our team prepared the proposed antenna configuration, mechanical drawings, and technical specifications for customer review.
The customer evaluated the design based on its installation structure, connector interface, cable routing, and expected RF performance.
Following the design review, the antenna configuration was finalized for engineering sample production.
Step 4 - Prototype Development and RF Testing
Engineering samples were manufactured for electrical and mechanical evaluation.
Depending on the agreed test plan, the evaluation included:
-
VSWR measurement across the required LTE bands
-
Return loss verification
-
Radiation pattern evaluation
-
Antenna gain and efficiency measurement, where applicable
-
Cable and connector inspection
-
Mechanical fit and installation checks
The test results provided a basis for evaluating the antenna design and identifying any necessary adjustments before device integration.
Step 5 - Device Integration and Optimization
After receiving the samples, the customer evaluated the antennas in the actual telematics device.
Because antenna performance can be affected by enclosure materials, nearby electronic components, metal structures, and antenna placement, integration testing was an important part of the development process.
Based on the evaluation results, potential optimization items included antenna positioning, cable routing, and RF matching.
Any required design revisions were reviewed before the final configuration was confirmed.
Step 6 - Preparation for Mass Production
After the design and sample evaluation were completed, the project could proceed to mass production following customer approval.
RIDA Antennaer's manufacturing and quality control processes support consistent product construction and electrical performance.
Production inspection can cover key items such as cable dimensions, connector assembly, appearance, and electrical performance according to the approved product specifications and inspection plan.
Project Value
A customized 4G LTE MIMO antenna solution helps automotive telematics manufacturers address the practical challenges of cellular antenna integration.
By coordinating antenna design, cable and connector selection, prototype evaluation, and manufacturing requirements, RIDA Antennaer supports customers throughout the product development process.
The final antenna configuration should be validated in the customer's actual device to confirm its suitability for the intended application.
